Drug Uses
Macrobid is used for treatment of urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken
Use Macrobid as directed by your doctor. Take Macrobid with a meal, preferably with breakfast and dinner, or with milk to enhance tolerance and improve absorption of Macrobid. Do not take an antacid that has magnesium trisilicate in it while you take Macrobid. To clear up your infection completely, take Macrobid for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Macrobid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Macrobid, if you have anemia, blood chemical abnormalities, diabetes, glucose–6–phosphate dehydrogenase (G–6–PD) deficiency, lung disease, nerve damage, porphyria, or vitamin B deficiency, if you are in a weakened state, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. Do not use Macrobid if you are at term (38 to 42 weeks pregnant), when the onset of labor is about to occur, or during labor and delivery. Macrobid passes into breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Macrobid. Some medicines may interact with Macrobid. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Macrobid may cause severe lung damage that may be permanent or fatal. If lung damage occurs, it may be sudden or chronic and may not be immediately recognized. This usually occurs in patients who are taking the medicine for 6 months or longer. Contact your doctor immediately if chest pain, coughing, difficulty breathing (especially upon exertion), or noticeable changes in lung function occur. Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Long–term or repeated use of Macrobid may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Macrobid only works against bacteria, it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold). Macrobid may discolor the urine. This is normal and not a cause for concern. Macrobid may cause the results of some tests for urine glucose to be wrong. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug. Macrobid should not be used in children younger than 1 month old, safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
